Meet Liz! – Our tour host

Fabulous and fun are often words used to describe TV personality and world traveller Liz Rigney. She has spent over 30 years at CTV Atlantic, graced countless music stages and has visited over 45 countries. While she has won awards for her journalism and singing, this trip of a lifetime to Ireland is sure to be her next accolade. “Travel is my life’s passion. I’ve been to Easter Island, Russia, and throughout Europe. I’ve hiked in Argentina, crossed the Great Wall of China, climbed Kilimanjaro, and cruised the Nile. But it’s Ireland that calls me back again and again.” Liz will tell you, she feels most at home in Ireland, her ancestral homeland. She has travelled throughout the Emerald Isle on her own, and on a special trip with her parents – to trace the Rigney Irish roots. She can’t wait to share the home of her heart with you.

Overseas travel to Dublin, Ireland.

Thursday, April 29 – Arrive at Dublin Airport. You will be met by a Maritime Travel representative to join your transfer to our centrally located hotel. While you are waiting to check-in at the hotel, you can explore the city and grab a bite to eat at a local pub or restaurant. We’re only a 5-minute walk from Temple Bar and Grafton Street. There’s lots of time to rest this afternoon before joining our host, Liz Rigney, for dinner and to meet your travelling companions. D

Friday, April 30 – After a leisurely Irish breakfast, we’ll head out for the first of many unique experiences. We will visit the Abbey Theatre, for a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Ireland’s National Theatre and the people who created it… Following in the footsteps of literary and theatrical legends. Later, we make a visit to Brown Thomas, the iconic Dublin luxury retailer that features collections of the world’s top designers. We’ll meet their top window designer for a guided walk through the history of the store, including a window dressing demonstration. We’ll have lunch at a local pub, and then you’re free to continue to explore on your own. Liz will have some suggestions for you – including Trinity College and the Book of Kells, the ‘home of the black stuff’, Guinness and Jameson Distillery. If, like Liz, you are of Irish heritage, you may wish to pre-book a session with a genealogist at the Irish Family History Centre at EPIC. You can do this before leaving Canada – visit irishfamilyhistorycentre.com/ visit-us/. Tonight, is a free night in Dublin. Dinner is on your own, or you may wish to join Liz at one of the many restaurants nearby. B L

Saturday, May 1 – Following breakfast, we say farewell to Dublin as we journey through Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands to Athlone, and visit what is considered to be the oldest pub in all of Ireland – Sean’s Bar. We’ll enjoy a “whiskey chat” and a taste of Sean’s own blend by a cozy peat fire. Later, we’ll make our way to Margaret’s Kitchen for an Irish cooking demonstration, followed by a delicious lunch. Then we continue on to Galway and check in to our city-centre hotel. Tonight we will enjoy dinner together at MacNeill’s Pub. B L D

Sunday, May 2 – After our Irish breakfast, we depart for Connemara, one of the most scenic and cultural regions in Ireland. We will visit Kylemore Abbey, a monastery that was founded in 1920 during WW1 for Benedictine nuns that were fleeing Belgium. Next, we head into the Irish countryside to visit a sheep farm where we will be treated to a delightful display of sheepdogs hard at work. Their skill is amazing. The remainder of the day and evening are at leisure. Lunch and dinner are on your own. You may wish to venture out to Shop Street, a buzzing pedestrian thoroughfare that is lined with great cafes, restaurants, and pubs, many featuring live music. Liz will have some suggestions. B

Monday, May 3 – Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we check out and travel the Burren Region of Country Clare to the mighty Cliffs of Moher, where you can stroll along the pathways of the Cliffs and tour the interactive Visitor Centre. We board a ferry across the Shannon Estuary to Doolin where we are in for a unique treat. We will be welcomed by Christy and Sheila as they invite us into the warmth of their home. We’ll enjoy wonderful hospitality, refreshments and a traditional Irish music session. We don’t think we’ll have trouble convincing Liz to join in! Afterwards we will make our way to Killarney and check into our hotel and enjoy dinner together. B D Snacks/Refreshments

Tuesday, May 4 – No trip to Ireland is complete without a journey to the edge of Ireland, along the Ring of Kerry Road, which is where we head after breakfast. We’ll pass through quaint towns and villages along the way, including Moll’s Gap, a mountain pass that offers breathtaking views of the McGillicuddy’s Reeks mountains. Once back in Killarney, you will enjoy some free time to experience the town’s welcoming atmosphere, traditional music-filled pubs, and beautiful lakes. There’s a vibrant food scene that reflects both its traditional Irish roots and its modern culinary influences. B

Wednesday, May 5 – Following breakfast we travel to the legendary village of Blarney and Blarney Castle for an iconic Irish experience. You can climb the 127 steps to kiss the Stone of Eloquence! Later, we’re in for a unique treat in the picturesque city of Cork – a culinary walking tour where we will meet and chat with local food producers and retailers and sample some of the city’s finest and freshest offerings. Tonight we dine together at our hotel. B D

Thursday, May 6 – We bid farewell to Cork after breakfast and make our way to Kilkenny Castle, built in 1260 to control a fording-point of the River Nore and a symbol of Norman occupation – we’ll enjoy a private, guided tour. Next, we visit Smithwick’s Brewery. Here, we’ll enjoy one of Ireland’s most popular drinks – Smithwick’s Ale, while learning of the brewing process and what makes the beer so unique. In County Kildare we stop at Clancy’s of Athy one of the area’s best-known pubs, that combines traditional Irish charm with modern comfort. Later, we’ll make our way to our fabulous castle hotel – Castle Kilkea – our home for the night. There will be free time to enjoy the castle grounds before we come together for a special farewell dinner fit for royalty. We’ll have music, drinks, and a couple of songs from Liz. We’ll raise a glass to new friends, and amazing one-of-a-kind experiences, before tucking in to our castle accommodations. B D
