Saturday, January 29 - Travel to San Jose, capital of Costa Rica. After clearing Customs and Immigration and claiming your luggage you will be met outside by Maxine and Mario and transferred to Studio Hotel Boutique, 30 minutes from the airport and 12km from downtown San Jose. It features beautiful Costa Rican and international art and views of the surrounding Central Valley. The balance of the day/evening is at leisure.

Sunday, January 30 - Following breakfast, our adventure begins with a visit to DOKA COFFEE ESTATE located in the foothills of POAS VOLCANO. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where we will experience first-hand how a choice bean is transformed into our morning cup of coffee. We then continue our adventure as we travel to LA PAZ WATERFALL GARDENS AND PARK, a private animal sanctuary with over 100 species. We will hike with our guide along the La Paz River, past five amazing waterfalls and enjoy a delicious Costa Rican lunch. Afterward, we visit some of the incredible exhibits, including the cat and bird exhibits, the butterfly observatory, hummingbird gardens, snake and frog exhibits, and much more. Tonight, we enjoy a welcome dinner and get to know our travelling companions. BLD

Monday, January 31 - After breakfast we say adios to San Jose and travel through breath-taking Jurassic Park-like BRAULIO CARRILLO NATIONAL PARK, crossing the Continental Divide to the Caribbean side of the country. Enjoy the relaxing CARIBBEAN RAINFOREST AERIAL TRAM through more than two kilometres of rainforest canopy, accompanied by our own naturalist guide. We will travel to the SARAPIQUI RIVER for a boat tour and hope to catch glimpses of wildlife along the river prior to checking into SELVA VERDE RAINFOREST LODGE, our home for the next two nights. Fauna such as keel-billed toucans, great green macaws, sloths and howler monkeys can be spotted in the lodge areas and on the reserve, so get ready and do not miss the experience of walking together with thousands of other species! Dinner tonight, as a group, is at LA TERRAZA RESTAURANT. BD

Tuesday, February 1 - Free morning to relax, enjoy the pool, lodge trails or take a local tour. Midday we will take part in a “charla”. What better way to learn about rural community life than to visit a home and meet a member of that community. We will visit a local casa and discover how a Tico family makes cheese and “arepas” and will have the opportunity to ask questions about life in this area. The project is arranged by the SCLC (Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center). Prior to dinner tonight, we will visit the SCLC located at the lodge property. Dinner tonight is in the main dining room, upstairs. Later, you might choose to explore the rainforest on a night walk with Mario. BLD

Wednesday, February 2 - Today we cross the Sarapiqui River to enter the Primary Forest Reserve of old growth and secondary forest for a hike with a naturalist guide. Afterward, surprises are in store along the way as we travel towards the northern region and one of the most famous volcanoes in the country. The major attraction is the splendid and famous ARENAL VOLCANO, its national park and man-made ARENAL LAKE. It’s an exciting destination for nature lovers and explorers with loads of adventure activities for all levels. Following lunch at Que Rico Restaurante, known for the Artisan Pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven, we will make our way up the mountain to ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE, our home for the next two nights. Boasting impressive views of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake, this hotel is the only hotel within ARENAL NATIONAL PARK. We will be literally surrounded by the wonders of the rainforest. After settling in to our “rooms with a view” we will have time to relax and enjoy our surroundings. Tonight we will enjoy dinner together. The rest of the evening is at leisure. BLD

Thursday, February 3 - Are you an early riser? Our alarm clock this morning might be a Howler Monkey or a Montezuma Oropendula! Enjoy breakfast overlooking the lake or viewing the volcano. The morning is free to spend an hour with Mario hiking the trails or enjoying the infinity pool or booking a tour in the area. Mid afternoon we will visit La Fortuna town and TABACON GRAND THERMAL RESORT & SPA. If you are looking for the “Garden of Eden,” this is it! This resort has many thermal pools to enjoy time bathing in the hot springs, strolling through the lush, tropical gardens of this secret paradise, or sipping a cool drink at the pool bar. You will have time to enjoy all this before savoring an amazing buffet dinner. BD

Friday, February 4 - Today we cross man-made LAKE ARENAL to meet up with our coach and journey to the beautiful and mystical area of MONTEVERDE, where trees grow to heights of more than 100 feet! Enjoy the view as we transition from rainforest to cloud forest. We will be amazed by the emerald-green foliage and the symphony sung by Monteverde’s animal kingdom. We will then arrive at FICUS SUNSET SUITES HOTEL, our home for the next two nights. Located in the heart of Monteverde and within walking distance of the small town of SANTA ELENA, you will find great local restaurants, shops and a grocery close by. We will experience amazing sunsets and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy and explore. Simply enjoy sitting on your balcony or patio while watching colourful birds and exotic animals that might frequent the branches near your suite. Later, a group dinner is included at our hotel. BD

Saturday, February 5 - Today we will join Mario as we hike the SELVATURA HANGING BRIDGES, a combination of suspension bridges, plus hiking trails. Count on up-close views of Costa Rica’s famous forest ecosystems and possible close encounters with the cloudforest inhabitants. If we are fortunate, we may spy the “resplendant quetzal” bird - the wish of many travellers who venture here. The afternoon and evening are free to relax or enjoy another of the many activities available in the area. B

Sunday, February 6 - Get set for another adventure as we leave the mountains of Monteverde Cloudforest behind us and journey west and south to the Pan American Highway – the longest highway in the world. Our destination – the Nicoya Peninsula. We will cross the gulf by ferry from the port of PUNTARENAS to PAQUERA Pier and continue on to TANGO MAR BEACHFRONT SPA & GOLF RESORT, our home for the next three nights. This intimate and exclusive small, deluxe resort is located on a 150-acre private beachfront reserve. It offers the ultimate relaxation escape or an active eco-vacation – the choice is yours. Guests here have access to a world of fascinating and exciting soft and adrenaline-rush activities: Horseback riding, kayaking, canopy zip lining, hiking, bird watching, golf, incredible sunset cruises, nature and ecological tours to nature wildlife reserves. The next few days are our time to relax, enjoy the beach and pools or check out the area and get rested for our journey back to reality! A group dinner is included tonight in the restaurant overlooking the stunning Pacific Ocean. BD

Monday, February 7 & Tuesday, February 8 -
Two days at leisure to enjoy Tango Mar Beach Resort. Our guide, Mario, & driver, Nico, will be available for local excursions. B

Wednesday, February 9 - Today we will return to the mainland and the Central Valley and visit SARCHI, Costa Rica’s main artisan town, before continuing on to San Jose. The brightly painted oxcarts that you have seen all over the country are made here. Oxcarts were once used to haul coffee beans over the mountains to the coast and remain a well known symbol of Costa Rica. We will visit an oxcart factory and see Guinness Book of World Records “largest oxcart in the world” located in the town square. This is the ideal place to purchase those last minute gifts and hand-crafted wooden items made from rare hardwoods for family and friends back home. Enjoy a free evening at CROWNE PLAZA SAN JOSE COROBICI, our home for the next two nights. B

Thursday, February 10 - Today we leave the city and travel past villages and fields of potatoes, carrots, onions and cabbage to witness spectacular panoramic views of surrounding hills and valleys as we ascend to the summit of IRAZU VOLCANO. This volcano, the highest active volcano in the country, has a moon-like landscape and mysterious green lagoons. There are a series of hiking trails and on a clear day, one can view the waters of both the Pacific and Caribbean. Our next stop is OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS BASILICA in CARTAGO, former capital of Costa Rica. The building houses ornate carvings and icons and is home to LA NEGRITA or BLACK VIRGIN - an important pilgrimage site each year by more than a million people. Next we drive into the OROSI VALLEY for our last stop, as we visit HACIENDA OROSI & HOTSPRINGS. We will have lunch and time to soak in these natural thermal pools. What an incredible way to end our last adventure in paradise! Tonight, be prepared for an evening of good food and lots of fun at our Farewell Dinner as we raise a glass to shared experiences with new friends and bid “adios” and “Pura vida” to guide, Mario and chofer, Nico. BLD

Friday, February 11 - Departure Day. Following breakfast there will be transfers to the airport for your flights home, unless you are choosing to extend your stay. B
